Sleep Medicine
What Happens on the Night
At The Sleep Cottage, our overnight sleep studies monitor your child’s sleep patterns, breathing, and movements in a comfortable setting.

What to Expect on the Night
of your Child’s Study
For standard Diagnostic (DX) studies
Upon your 5.30 PM arrival, please show evidence of your Covid test results to the night staff. Our staff will provide you with an envelope with your receipt and the Wi-Fi details. You will be shown to your private room. You will be staying in the same room as your child in your own bed if you do not co-sleep with your child. Only one adult is permitted to remain overnight.
After you are settled in, our friendly sleep technicians will conduct a brief admission questionnaire and proceed to set your child up for their sleep study by applying several leads to their head, face, and body. The equipment takes about 45 minutes to apply and does not hurt at all. The sleep technician will explain this procedure in more detail on the night.
The recording of the sleep study will start after the equipment is set up and as close to the child’s regular bedtime as possible. At this time, we ask that all electronic devices and lighting in the room be switched off.
Parents/Carers are not locked in the rooms at lights out. If your child is asleep, you are welcome to return downstairs to the common area to relax, make a cuppa, and catch up on Netflix before turning in for the night. Please make the most of someone else keeping a vigilant watch on your child as they sleep.
Next Morning: Your child will be woken up at approximately 6:00 AM on the following morning & discharged shortly after. Please inform our staff if you need to leave earlier than this. Late discharge is not available as The Sleep Cottage closes at 7:00AM.
Please ensure to collect all your belongings, as staff have plenty of chargers and headphones already! Any lost property will be kept for a maximum of 2 weeks before disposal.

For Patients who are having CPAP or MSLT (Night & Day) Study
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) Studies
Please bring your CPAP machine (ensuring data card is attached), mask, and tubing. The whole night will be spent with the child on our own CPAP device, with staff monitoring and remotely adjusting the pressure overnight to achieve a pressure that will provide the most benefit to your child.
If your doctor has requested a Split Diagnostic/CPAP study: This involves half the night as a diagnostic and the other half of the night as a CPAP titration (as described above).
Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) Studies
After completing an overnight standard diagnostic sleep study, your child will be required to remain onsite at our premises during the day, so bring an easy-to-prepare breakfast and lunch. Half of the monitoring equipment used overnight will be taken off, and your child will be requested to attempt to sleep at various points of the day.
Please bring food for the daytime component of the study. You will be required to remain on the premises for approximately 24 hours in total.
